The fight against piracy continues. After a takedown of a service with over 2 million customers and another that involved police replacing the service with an anti-piracy message, another IPTV provider has been shut down. This time, it involved three arrests and police seizing assets including luxury cars.
In late June, police searched a home in the town of Lytham St Annes and arrested a 28 year old man allegedly involved in selling pirated services and illegal streaming devices. In the raid, police seized a Range Rover Sport SVR V8 and Audi A5 convertible, along with designer clothes and accessories, reported Torrent Freak.
Following that arrest, the Police Service of Northern Ireland charged two more individuals, citing “a substantial online fraud involving the sale of illegal subscriptions for TV channels and broadcasters”.
“A 34 year old man and a 30 year old woman have been charged with a range of offences including making or supplying articles for use in fraud, possessing articles infringing copyright, unauthorised use of a trademark and concealing criminal property. Both are expected to appear at Magherafelt Magistrates court on 15 July 2020. As is usual procedure the charges will be reviewed by the PPS,” a police spokesperson said.
Torrent Freak notes that while the focus of these cases tends to be on copyright infringement, fraud and money laundering are additional offenses that are brought up consistently. These charges can lead to heavier sentences along with property being seized.
