Piracy Is a Multi-Million Dollar Business

Channel Surfing ManHave you ever wondered how much privacy services make? This week we got a good idea after DISH won their lawsuit against Set TV.

According to the recent court ruling, Set TV was offering illegal access to live TV streams for $20 a month. In the ruling, the Judge said that Set TV had 180,398 subscribers and that they needed to pay $90+ million in damages to DISH. So how much did Set TV make? At $20 a subscriber that works out to over $3.6 million every month.

Also consider that Set TV didn’t pay royalties like many legal services like fuboTV, who at the time had fewer subscribers, and it is very possible that Set TV made more money than many of the smaller legal live TV streaming services.

The scary part is Set TV is just one of many non-official streaming services out there. After seeing numbers, you can understand why companies like DISH are starting to target piracy devices and services with lawsuits. Look for a flood of new lawsuits targeting small and large piracy services, especially now that DISH has won several landmark cases against Kodi add-on makers, “Kodi Box” makers, and services like Set TV.
