During the AMA (Ask Me Anything) session the question of live locals on Philo came up. Currently Philo offers no live locals as part of their live TV streaming service; however, their CEO said, “We’ve spoken to them many times, and we’re definitely open to adding them to the service, but we aren’t going to do it if we can’t preserve the flexibility and value that we think consumers want.”
While Philo may be open to the idea, the fact that they are unwilling to raise their price and probably unwilling to include the required bundled channels makes the possibility of locals added to Philo far less likely.
Currently the big five—ABC, CBS, CW, FOX, and NBC—are all owned by companies that also own sports networks. Philo has made it clear that they are unwilling to add sports, and broadcast network owners have been unwilling to sell access to locals without them also caring a bundle of their cable networks including sports networks.
So the question now is will someone blink. Will Philo offer sports or will broadcast networks agree to unbundle their locals on streaming services?
