Philo Is Working on Adding Locals Through an Antenna

Since Philo launched, people have wished they could also get their locals with the service. Now Philo is working on letting you add locals and Philo channels side by side thanks to Google’s Live Channels app.

This was first spotted on Reddit by a user who pointed out that they could now access their Philo channels and local channels through their antenna on the Google Live Channel app. Yet the integration seemed less than complete.

In response, Philo’s official Twitter account said:

Oops, we enabled this completely on accident. We will build a proper integration with Live Channels, but believe it or not, it is non trivial. We’re doing some other work on the player in support of our mobile Android app (!!!) that we need to finish up before we can take on Live Channels.

Again, apologies for the false hope on this one!

The good news here is Philo is working on integrating channels from your antenna and Philo. The bad news/good news is first Philo wants to finish building their Android app.

This move by Philo will turn Android TV devices into an Air TV-like player. Sling TV’s Air TV has, for a few years now, let add locals from an antenna into the Sling TV app. Hopefully, Philo is able to roll this feature out for all users to use. The ability to have locals and Philo channels in a single place should help Philo stand out from a growing number of live TV streaming services.
