Peacock Reaches 54 Million Sign Ups with Help From the Olympics

Peacock, from NBCUniversal, ended Q2 2021 with 54 million sign ups, according to Comcast’s earnings report Thursday morning. That number includes over 20 million monthly active users.

Comcast does not break out free and paid Peacock users when reporting its subscriber numbers.

Comcast Chairman and CEO Brian Roberts attributed the growth to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, as well as the release of Boss Baby 2 on the streaming service and the launch of the original series Dr. Death.

Along with subscriber numbers, Comcast shared today that Sky will make Peacock available at no additional cost to nearly 20 million Sky customers in Europe. Peacock will be available on Sky platforms, including Sky Q, NOW, and Sky Ticket later this year.

“Comcast’s Xfinity has been integral to the success of our go-to-market strategy with Peacock in the U.S., and we see a similar opportunity to expand internationally with Sky,” said Jeff Shell, Chief Executive Officer, NBCUniversal. “We are excited to bring Peacock to millions of Sky customers and add incredible value to their platforms with a premium catalog of the best entertainment from across NBCUniversal that is included with their subscription. By leveraging Comcast’s Xfinity platforms in the U.S., we were able to test and learn, quickly drive scale, usage, and brand awareness of Peacock. We look forward to doing the same with Sky in Europe.”

Peacock launched in April 2020 to Comcast broadband and cable customers before a national launch in July. The company planned for the 2020 Olympics to be a major draw just after the streaming service’s debut, but hit a roadblock when the Games, along with film and TV productions, were postponed due to COVID.
