Peacock Free Makes Strong Debut, Peacock Premium Lags Behind

Two weeks in, and we’re getting a look at how NBC’s new streaming service Peacock might fare in a crowded landscape. And the early indications are mostly good.

In its first 14 days, Peacock Free, the service’s free tier, saw over eight times the streams of Peacock Premium, the paid tier. Taking a look at all of the “new” services together during that same time period, Peacock Free slightly more streams than HBO Max and Disney+ and significantly more than Apple TV+. Peacock Premium saw the fewest streams in that timeframe.

Of course, it’s fair to say those aren’t exactly competing products since one is free and the others are paid. But Peacock Free’s success shows that it may be able to hold its own and shows that NBCUniversal’s gamble may be paying off.

But is it viable long term?

Peacock Free customers get access to 92% of Peacock’s catalog and 89.5% of Peacock customers are free users, so you have to wonder if the premium content is enough to draw paying customers.

And even though Peacock is still pretty new, they’ve already had several hit movies (including the first three “Jurassic Park” movies, the “Matrix” trilogy, “Fast and Furious”) leave the service, and even though every streaming service deals with content coming and going, it’ll be interesting to see if early churn affects Peacock’s numbers.
