Paramount Global has brought on veteran trial attorney Beth Wilkinson to take the lead role in its high-stakes antitrust trial against the state of California. Beth Wilkinson has built a distinguished career spanning more than three decades as one of the most respected trial lawyers in the United States. Born in Saratoga Springs, New York, she graduated from Princeton University with a bachelor’s degree before earning her law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law. She began her professional life as a commissioned officer in the United States Army Judge Advocate General’s Corps, rising to the rank of captain and serving as an assistant to the Army’s General Counsel for intelligence and special operations. At the conclusion of her military service, she assisted as a Special Assistant United States Attorney in the Southern District of Florida on the prosecution of Manuel Noriega.
Wilkinson later joined the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of New York and then moved to the Department of Justice in Washington. There she took on significant responsibilities in high-profile criminal matters, including a lead role in the prosecution of the Oklahoma City bombers Timothy McVeigh and Terry Nichols. She remains the only two-time recipient of the Attorney General’s Award for Exceptional Service, the Justice Department’s highest honor. After leaving government service, she became a partner at prominent national law firms before co-founding the trial boutique Wilkinson Stekloff, where she continues to handle bet-the-company civil litigation and complex antitrust disputes. Her recent victories include securing a complete defense win for the National Football League in a major class-action challenge to its media distribution practices.
Paramount faces allegations from California authorities that the proposed transaction would harm competition in entertainment and media markets. State officials have argued that the combination could reduce consumer choice, limit opportunities for independent creators, and concentrate control over content distribution. Paramount maintains that the deal would enhance competition by creating a stronger rival to larger streaming and studio players, generate efficiencies, and benefit audiences through expanded programming options.
