Paramount Cancels The 2025 CMT Music Awards MTV Europe Music Awards, & More But Plans to Bring Them Back

Paramount Global is putting several of its major events on hold for 2025, including the MTV Europe Music Awards (EMAs), the CMT Music Awards, the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards Mexico, and the MTV MIAWs (formerly the MTV Millennial Awards). This strategic pause comes as the company undergoes a significant restructuring and seeks to “reimagine and optimize” its events strategy for the future, according to a report from The Hollywood Reporter.

The decision to pause these events was communicated in an internal memo from Bruce Gillmer, Paramount’s President of Music, Music Talent, Programming and Events, and Chief Content Officer of Music for Paramount+. The memo emphasizes that the company remains committed to its “world-class events” as a key part of its music offerings, but it is taking this opportunity to re-evaluate and potentially revamp these events for future iterations.  

The pause will not affect flagship events like the MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) and the Kids’ Choice Awards in the U.S., nor will it impact local events like Isle of MTV Malta and the VMAJs. However, the future of the paused events remains uncertain, with no clear timeline for a decision on their eventual return or potential reformatting.

This move comes as Paramount Global is undergoing a period of significant change. The company recently agreed to a merger with Skydance Media, which is expected to close in the first half of 2025. Additionally, Paramount has been implementing cost-cutting measures, including layoffs and the shuttering of Paramount TV Studios, as part of a broader effort to streamline operations and improve profitability.  

The decision to pause select events is likely part of this broader restructuring effort. By re-evaluating its events strategy, Paramount can assess the costs, benefits, and potential for innovation for each event. This could lead to changes in format, scale, or even the platforms on which these events are broadcast.

The entertainment industry is undergoing a period of rapid transformation, with streaming and digital platforms increasingly challenging traditional television and event formats. Paramount’s decision to pause and reimagine its events reflects a recognition of this changing landscape and a desire to adapt its strategy accordingly.
