Over One-Third of DIRECTV NOW, PlayStation Vue, & Sling TV’s Customers Also Have Cable TV

This week at the Denver Pay TV Show, Joel Espelien, a senior analyst at TDG, opened up about their cord cutting studies. One of the most interesting was a look at who is paying for a live TV streaming service—such as Sling TV, DIRECTV NOW, and Hulu—and cable TV.

According to Espelien, 36.9% of live TV streaming service subscribers also subscribe to a traditional pay-TV service. That means of the roughly 5 million live TV subscribers about 1.7 million of them also pay for a traditional pay-TV service.

So why do 1.7 million Americans pay for PlayStation Vue and cable TV? A good number of them are likely pay-TV customers who are planning on becoming cord cutters. They are testing out different services in preparation for their move to cord cutting.

The other group is people who keep a basic set of locals. Maybe they live in an area where an antenna won’t work or they get a live TV streaming service for a channel their cable company does not have, such as the Pac-12 Network.
