This year’s nominations for the 2022 Academy Awards are in, and there are plenty of streaming originals in the lineup. Netflix’s The Power of the Dog starring Benedict Cumberbatch leads the streaming pack with 12 nominations alone including Best Picture, Best Actor, and more.
However, this year was a slight return to more traditional theatrical releases taking center stage as theaters were more up and running compared to last year. Theater-exclusive films like House of Gucci , Licorice Pizza and Westside Story are all feeling the Oscar love with nominations in multiple categories.
Other hybrid films available on both streaming and in theaters saw nominations, including Dune (HBO Max) and Encanto (Disney+).
In total, Netflix received 27 nominations this year, down from its 36 in 2021, Amazon has 3 including Being the Ricardos (down from 12) Apple TV+ pulled in 6 including Coda (up from 2), and Hulu is on par with last year at one nomination.
