Only 8% of Americans Still Buy Music CDs

Today Limelight Networks released their 2018 State of Digital Lifestyles report. With it comes some revelations that should seriously worry TV executives.

One of the most interesting parts of the report was how strong digital music has become. According to the survey, only 8% of Americans still purchase music CDs. Fifty-three percent prefer streaming music online, and only 39% still download music to listen to offline.

Music is a great predictor of the future of TV. Radio today, with all their issues, is about 5 to 10 years ahead of where TV is right now. And, streaming is already one of Americans’ preferred methods for watching TV.

What will happens in 5 to 10 years when 90% of Americans want to stream or download their TV show?

You already see companies like Disney, Discovery, and Viacom rushing to launch streaming services. The question now is will what streaming services offer meet the demands of a growing number of Americans who want their content online when and how they want it.
