The Nvidia Shield Just Got a New YouTube App With 360 Video Support

First announced back at CES 2017 the new YouTube app has come to the Nvidia Shield with 360 videos. Now you will find a new user interface (UI) and 360 video support.

YouTube 360

The new YouTube app on the Nvidia Shield brings 360° video support to live streams. You can now use your remote and Nvidia Shield game controller to move around the video on your screen.

A New UI

Today’s update includes a new menu on the left side that is a lot more streamlined to make finding your content quick and easy. You will also notice that YouTube now shows the signed-in account at the very top.

The new, updated theme boasts slightly darker shades in the background and uses white backgrounds to highlight selected elements.

Additionally, the top of the Home screen now displays a row of areas of interest. There you’ll find your individual recommendations as well YouTube Red Original programming. Following those, you’ll be presented with broader topics like Gaming, Food, and Beauty.

Auto Play Changes

The YouTube team has also updated the autoplay feature meaning that the next video no longer starts automatically, but rather, there’s now a five second buffer that gives you time to play a video of yourchoosing or even pause video playback. You can also disable autoplay entirely.

In previous versions of the YouTube app on SHIELD, there were buttons which allowed you to skip forward and backward in a video. In this update, these buttons have been replaced with Next and Previous. When you select one of these buttons you’re presented with a thumbnail image of the video being shown and what to expect at the new location. This is a feature that is common in other streaming video apps like Netflix and Hulu.

If you don’t see this new YouTube app on your Nvidia Shield just go into the Google Play Store and update your app.
