As 2017 gets started Roku streaming media players now have access to over 450,000 movies and TV episodes. All this is available through over 4,500 official Roku channels, making Roku one of the best devices for cord cutters because they offer a wide range of Roku channels offering myriad content.
The Roku streaming player has come a long way from its beginnings as a device for streaming Netflix. Roku was one of the first streaming media players that offered an app store. This openness and support of a wide range of streaming services has set it apart from other steaming media players. Currently Roku is the only top 5 streaming media store that supports a wide range of streaming stores such as Amazon, VUDU, and Google Play.
Hopefully the success of the Roku streaming player will be an example for all streaming media players; however, this is unlikely to happen. Most streaming media devices are made with the hope that you buy more content through the creator’s store. This leads them to lock down their media players.
That is a different approach than Roku takes because Roku hopes you watch more content and subscribe to more services. Roku makes its money from people who subscribe to streaming services through Roku and by people watching ads. Roku is the number one supplier of ads on streaming media players.
This change of focus from selling shows and movies to you to getting you to stream content probably points to why Roku has so many streaming services that others do not; however, we still face the growing trend of streaming media players paying for exclusive access to some new servers for a limited time. It should be interesting to see how that plays out in 2017.
