No Roku Did Not Add PornHub to The Roku Store, But You Can…

porn_hub_header_1Roku is well-known for being an open platform on which anyone can build an app. So when PornHub, a popular adult website, yesterday announced they now have a Roku Channel where you can watch adult videos on your Roku many became concerned that Roku is now allowing adult channels in their store.

The truth is that PornHub is not in the Roku Channel store, but it is available if you know how to side load a Roku channel to your Roku with the channel code. There have even been other unofficial apps that would bring you adult content to your Roku if you knew what the code was.

We reached out to Roku for comment and received the following statement. “Roku is an open platform for streaming on TV and welcomes providers to distribute content to consumers. However we don’t allow adult content in the Roku Channel Store.”

So Roku still bans adult channels from their Roku store, but it is true that you can add it on your own Roku. So have no fear of your kids finding porn inside the Roku Channel Store.

This is a similar policy that other big box makers have. The Amazon Fire TV allows third-party apps that they do not control but do limit what is available on their official app store. Android TV allows unofficial apps but does control what can go into their Google Play store for Android TV.

If you are concerned about what your kids are adding to their Roku the best method would be to ensure all your Rokus are on the same account. If they would add an adult channel, such as PornHub, to their Roku it will also show up on your Roku at the same time, giving you a red flag about what they are doing.
