Nintendo Switch 2 May Now Launch in 2025 Instead of 2024

The Nintendo Switch 2 may be arriving later than you expected.

Brazilian gaming journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe said on the O Xdo Controle YouTube channel (Portuguese) that five sources told him the next-generation console would arrive in 2025, according to VGC, which translated and reported on the comments, and also cited its own sources that said they were working on games for the console slated for the first quarter of 2025.

The follow-up to the smash-hit Switch console — which still sees significant sales after nearly seven years — has been highly anticipated for years, and many had pegged it to come out in 2024. But Nintendo has never talked about timing for the Switch 2 — and has barely talked about it at all. Late last year, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa said the current Switch would be its main focus going in 2024.

Nintendo wasn’t immediately available to comment on the reports.

While the Switch does continue to sell, the console has long started feeling its age, even as rivals Microsoft and Sony jumped to the next generation four years ago. The company maintains a loyal following and boasts some of the best-selling titles in history, like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, but gamers have noticed the growing gap between the power of its hardware vs. the Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X.

The last upgrade to the original Switch came in 2021 with the debut of the OLED version, which boasts a slightly larger, OLED display and a few minor hardware improvements.
