Today Scripps announced and Nexstar confirmed that its eight CW affiliates would not renew their contracts to offer CW programing on September 1st 2024.
With this move, these CW stations will become independent stations that Scripps can use to offer other content on now:
- WMYD-20 in Detroit
- WSFL-39 in Miami,
- WGNT-27 in Norfolk
- KWBA-58 in Tucson
- KRIS-6.2 in Corpus Christi, Tex.
- KSBY-6.2 in San Luis Obispo, Calif.
- KATC-3.2 in Lafayette, La.
In a statement sent to Cord Cutters News, Nexstar said:
“The CW does not intend to renew its affiliation agreement with the Scripps-owned television stations in seven markets. We are excited that the CW affiliations in two of those markets—Norfolk, Virginia, and Lafayette, Louisianna—will be moving to Nexstar-owned stations on September 1. We have interest from other station groups in the five remaining markets and expect to make announcements about those affiliations soon. We are prepared for this transition and confident that The CW will continue to reach 100% of US television households without interruption.”
Since Nexstar has become the primary owner of the CW network, it has been moving CW stations to Nexstar-owned local stations in any market it can. Now, it seems that once again, the CW network will be needing new homes later this year.
Nexstar says they are in active talks to find new homes for the impacted markets with this change.
