New Roku Players Are Coming This Week

We have known for some time that new Roku players are on the way. Last week we even saw images leaked online thanks to Dave Zatz. Before that we saw what we expect is their new Roku OS 7.5 after images of a new Roku user interface were posted on the developer site.

Now from all the leaks and the recently found FAQ about the new Rokus on Roku’s own website, we are confident that the new Roku players are coming this week. (If not this week than we expect them next week.)

So what should you expect from the new Roku models?

The new Roku models will ditch the numbers in exchange for names. The Roku Express will replace the Roku 1 as the basic Roku model. We expect it to have a faster processor, and we have learned that it will be powered by USB, which will likely allow it to be powered by your TV’s USB port or wall outlet.

The Roku Premiere and Roku Premiere Plus will replace the Roku 2 and Roku 3. These will be the middle of the road devices with 4K and HDR support along with faster processors. We are unsure what the differences will be between the Roku Premiere and the Roku Premiere Plus+ at this time.

The last model is the Roku Ultra, which will replace the Roku 4 and include an optical audio out along with a Find My Remote feature to make finding a lost remote easier.

When will they come out?

We do not know the exact date the new Roku models will be released but between the leaks of the FCC documents and the growing list of retailors with the Roku on sale or out of stock it is likely to happen this week. Although there may be an announcement today the release of the new Rokus may be as much as a month out.

Should I wait to buy the new Rokus?

If you want a Roku player I would just buy one. The new Rokus are likely to be slightly more powerful but if you do not have a 4K TV the current Roku players are great and are on sale. So if you want one now and are not willing to wait for the new Rokus, head out and buy one on sale today.
