Yesterday MacRumors reported that some iTunes users are seeing their purchases history start to show past movies purchases now available in 4K HDR. Yet when you try to download them you still only get the option for 720p or 1080p HD.
It is assumed that these movies like the recent Passengers movie from 2016 will support 4K when the new Apple TV comes out this fall. It has been long rumored that the new Apple TV will support 4K and this likely will add HDR to the lineup.
This will mean that the Apple TV will now be on par at least in video quality with the Roku, Nvidia Shield, and the rumored new Fire TV. (Currently the Fire TV only offers 4K.) The lack of 4K and HDR support had been one of the reasons many suspected that the Apple TV has recently been stuck in 4th place in the United States behind Roku, Fire TV, and Chromecast payers.
According to Bloomberg the 5th generation Apple TV is code named J105 and will have 4K support along with more vivid colors a reference that most likely means HDR will be included.
It was also reported by Firi Games that a decive identified as “AppleTV6,2” recently connected to their game with a IP address that fell within a range linked to Apple’s headquarters.
Current AppleTVs identify as AppleTV5.3 and no Apple TV6,2 are listed with any known Apple TV model.
Add in the new 4K HDR support in iTunes but no supporting devices to download them likely points to a new Apple TV coming this fall with 4K HDR Support.
