New DIRECTV NOW Users Now Get AT&T Access IDs

Watching tv and using remote controlFor some time now, AT&T has been saying they plan to merge DIRECTV NOW and the DIRECTV backend. The goal has been to have both DIRECTV and DIRECTV NOW use the same apps for online streaming. This will help reduce AT&T’s development costs by removing the need to have teams work on multiple apps.

Last week we reported that AT&T has started the process to merge DIRECTV NOW and AT&T accounts. It now looks like AT&T has taken one more step in this ongoing merging process.

According to the updated DIRECTV NOW login help page, all accounts created on or after March 12th 2018 now have an AT&T Access ID. From the looks of the help page, older accounts will still have DIRECTV NOW account ID’s, but newer DIRECTV NOW accounts are now all AT&T Access account ID’s.

After my last post on this topic, a few readers asked why DIRECTV customers can’t use DIRECTV NOW, and why DIRECTV NOW customers can’t use AT&T apps and such if they are merged. For a short explanation, just because the apps are the same does not mean you will get access to content that you do not pay for.

While the accounts may be the same on the backend you will still only get access to content you have previously paid for.

We do know that recently AT&T has launched a beta test for a new DIRECTV app that looks extremely similar in some regards to the DIRECTV NOW app. With the merger of the accounts and the new DIRECTV app, it looks like AT&T is making good on their promises to merge the apps.
