New $100B Plan Promises to Connect Every Household to Broadband

A new presidential plan being announced Wednesday includes a $100 billion budget toward expanding broadband services in the U.S. The $200 trillion “American Jobs Plan” includes a broadband expansion goal to connect every household by the end of the decade.

The president’s plan includes a section stating it “will bring affordable, reliable, high-speed broadband to every American, including the more than 35 percent of rural Americans who lack access to broadband at minimally acceptable speeds,” according to the package fact sheet.

“While the President recognizes that individual subsidies to cover internet costs may be needed in the short term, he believes continually providing subsidies to cover the cost of overpriced internet service is not the right long-term solution for consumers or taxpayers,” the fact sheet states.

Along with expanding internet access, the infrastructure plan also focuses on creating jobs, raising wages, updating and maintaining transportation services including 20,000 miles of highways, roads, and main-streets, and more.
