This week, Netgear announced a new addition to its Orbi mesh router line, a slightly more affordable option for those looking for a mesh approach to covering their homes with WiFi. The company says its new tri-band AX4200 (RBK752) system can support more than 40 connected devices and can cover 5,000 square feet. At a starting price of $449.99, it also undercuts Netgear’s earlier AX6000 by $150.
To recap, mesh router systems generally consist of a main router that plugs into your modem, and some satellite devices strategically placed around your home. The idea is to improve coverage in areas of your house (or business) where WiFi signals directly from a centrally located router are particularly weak or inconsistent.
Netgear’s latest models include the RBK752, which comes with a router and a single satellite node for $449.99. The RBK753 adds a second satellite to the package for $599.99. That extra satellite bumps up the advertised specs, with Netgear saying it can cover 7,500 square feet compared to the RBK752’s 5,000 square feet.
“In the current environment where home networks are now constrained by every member of the household working from home, distance learning and streaming video or playing online games, this new Orbi WiFi 6 Mesh system is designed to carry the heavy load of this new reality,” David Henry, senior vice president of Connected Home Products, said in a press release.
Both options are now available online, including via Netgear’s own storefront.
