Netflix’s ‘Sweet Tooth’ Tops Nielsen’s Overall List Thanks to a Wide Demographic Appeal

Netflix and Disney+ cleaned house this week with the most titles on Nielsen’s top 10 streaming lists, including Original, Acquired, and Movie titles. Netflix held the top overall spot with Sweet Tooth which pulled in an impressive 1,434 minutes of viewing time for the week ending June 13. The fantasy drama is based on the DC comic by the same name and is drawing viewers from across all demographics, similar to how Stranger Things appeals to audiences of different ages, genders, and more.

Speaking of audience demographics, like most MCU titles, Loki tends to skew slightly male, which is why it may seem surprising the 30 minute premiere was able to clock 731 million minutes of viewing time. It’s worth noting that Loki is the first MCU series to premiere on a Wednesday, which Disney+ is moving toward with many of its other series. Having a mid-week premiere gives the show a head start for its opening ‘weekend,’ thus a typically higher number of views.

Hulu was the only other streaming service to make an appearance on any of the top 10 lists for the week with The Handmaid’s Tale in the fourth spot.

The supernatural drama television series Manifest broke 1 billion minutes of streaming time on Netflix, followed by – you guessed it – Grey’s Anatamoy and Criminal Minds. The popular British period drama Downton Abbey is also on the list, along with NCIS and Cocomelon which regularly gains high viewership numbers thanks to the repeat-viewing tendencies of small children.

Disney+ topped the movies chart with Raya and the Last Dragon because the film came out from behind the Premier Access paywall at the beginning of June. The animated film raked in 953 million minutes of streaming. As far as demographics go, it’s obvious Raya is popular with the the 2-11 age group, but over 80% of the film’s viewing instances were co-viewing instances, meaning older viewers were watching with children or grandhildren.

Dragons seemed to be a popular theme this week as another animated film, Wish Dragon, held the No. 2 spot. The Netflix original clocked 366 million streaming minutes, followed by Home with 240.
