Netflix’s “Strangers Things” Was Turned Down 15 Times by Other Networks

Stranger ThingsIn just one more sign of how traditional TV is failing to understand the new TV market is Netflix’s new show “Stranger Things.”

“Stranger Things” is a nostalgic walk through 80s films and has become the breakout hit of the summer. What is even more surprising is how almost every major network rejected the show before Netflix picked it up.

After so many rejections the creators started to wonder if it would ever happen. “There was a week where we were like, ‘This isn’t going to work because people don’t get it,’” they told Rolling Stone.

This is not the first time Netflix has had a huge breakout show that other networks turned down. “Making a Murderer” was just such a show. It became a huge success.

There is something to say about Netflix’s ability to be more flexible in content creation. The lack of control by the FCC and fewer hands in the pot trying to direct the show gives Netflix more freedom. And there also seems to be a very different mindset when it comes to Netflix that allows them to take risks others seem unwilling to try. Something that so far has paid off.
