The upcoming Netflix doc juxtaposes the stories of two teenage girls, Audrie Pott and Daisy Coleman, who were sexually assaulted and then bullied online. The film traces the events and aftermath of the young women’s high-profile cases, digging through interviews, social media, court documents, and police investigations. Husband-and-wife team Bonni Cohen and Jon Shenk direct.
Three years ago, Maryville, Missouri, was the center of a sexual-assault scandal, when high-school freshman Daisy Coleman claimed she had been raped by an older football player while blacked out at a party in an assault that was reportedly captured on camera. Her allegation set off harassment, a potential cover up, and, eventually, an internet firestorm; now, the new Netflix documentary Audrie & Daisy tells her story alongside that of Audrie Pott, a California girl who underwent a similar ordeal and killed herself weeks later.
The Documentary, which was original shows at Sundance earlier this year, will premiere on the streaming service and in theaters September 23.
The movie is one in a string of projects Netflix nabbed the rights for at this year’s Sundance.
