Netflix’s ‘Away’ Canceled After One Season

Netflix has canceled its original series Away before giving it a shot at a second season. The space drama starring Hilary Swank apparently just wasn’t cutting it, despite it being on Netflix’s own top ten list at one point, and even ranking No. 2 on the Nielsen ratings for the first week after its release on September 4th.

in Away, Hilary Swank stars as Emma Green, an astronaut who struggles with leaving her husband and daughter behind to embark on a dangerous mission with an international space crew. The three-year mission to Mars launches from the Moon, however, several crew members do not trust Emma’s ability to command because of her response to a crisis situation at the very beginning of the mission.

With plenty of soapy drama and the last episode of season 1 leaving the crew still on Mars, it’s clear Away creator Andrew Hinderaker intended this to be more than a one-and-done show. “There’s no news to break in terms of whether we know that there will be future seasons, but the plan was always for a multi-season arc,” Hinderaker said.

This is the latest Netflix originals to get the ax this year. The streaming giant has also canceled the women’s wrestling drama “GLOW,” “Teenage Bounty Hunters,” “The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance,” “Altered Carbon,” “The Society” and “I Am Not Okay With This.”
