Netflix Will Launch Its Ad-Supported Tier in November

Netflix has made the official announcement about its ad-supported plans. Basic with Ads, Netflix’s new lower priced ad-supported plan, will launch on November 3 at 9 am PT and will cost $6.99/month.

Basic with Ads plans will be available in Australia, Brazil, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Korea, Mexico, Spain, the UK, and the US. The Basic, Standard, and Premium plans will still be available in addition to the new plan option.

Netflix says the ads will be 15 and 30 seconds long and will be shown before, during, and after shows and movies. With the new plan, users will only be able to watch on one screen at a time and content will not be available to download.

Plans for an ad-support tier for the streamer were first announced in April, following a subscriber loss reported during a Netflix quarterly earnings call.

“Those who have followed Netflix know that I have been against the complexity of advertising, and a big fan of the simplicity of subscription,” Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said during the call. “But as much as I am a fan of that, I am a bigger fan of consumer choice. And allowing consumers who would like to have a lower price, and are advertising-tolerant get what they want, makes a lot of sense.”
