With a surge in viewership during the current pandemic, Netflix has seen an influx of users streaming international shows on the platform. That could be due to the fact that 86% of its 15.7M new subscribers in the first three months of 2020 came from outside the US and Canada, but it also could mean domestic viewers are just getting more adventurous with their viewing selections.
Netflix’s international shows like Money Heist have turned out to be a great investment over the last few months with Netflix CEO Reed Hastings attributing it to the fact that they “translate across borders because they reflect universal truths.” English dubbing doesn’t seem to be deterring 65M viewers from streaming the drama Money Heist (La Casa De Papel). Other popular global titles include Germany’s Unorthodox which was filmed in Yiddish, and the romantic Italian Summertime about two young adults from different backgrounds who fall in love during a summer on Italy’s Adriatic Coast.
“Throughout the pandemic, we’ve seen our members watching more content from other countries or cultures. In part, that’s because people have had more time to explore our service,” Hastings said. “In part, it’s because we’re discovering that the more global we become, the more important it is that we work with local, diverse creators to tell local, authentic stories that speak to us all.
