Netflix and Universal Filmed Entertainment Group (UFEG) are strengthening their collaboration with an expanded licensing agreement. The deal not only renews the existing partnership for animated films but also grants Netflix US rights to Universal Pictures and Focus Features live-action films starting in 2027.
Key Highlights of the Agreement:
- Continued Animation Dominance: Netflix retains exclusive US rights to UFEG’s animated films, including those from Illumination (Despicable Me, Sing) and DreamWorks Animation (Shrek, Kung Fu Panda).
- Live-Action Expansion: Starting in 2027, Netflix gains access to Universal Pictures and Focus Features live-action films roughly eight months after their theatrical release.
- Peacock Window: Before arriving on Netflix, the live-action films will premiere on Peacock. Netflix will then have a 10-month exclusive window before the films return to Peacock.
- Library Titles: Netflix will also license rights to select titles from Universal’s extensive film library.
A Mutually Beneficial Partnership:
This expanded agreement benefits both companies. Netflix strengthens its film library with popular animated and live-action titles, while UFEG maximizes the reach of its films across different platforms and viewing windows.
