The first thing Netflix is doing to address the demands for more content is to double down on original content. In 2017 UBS estimates that Netflix’s original content will top 2,000 hours and by 2020 Netflix will have an estimated 8,000+ hours of original content.
Netflix is spending over $6 billion on original content in just 2016 with plans to continue to spend heavily on original content in the future.
If you want to watch every Netflix original episode in 2017 it would take you almost a year. In 2020 it will take you an estimated almost 3 years of non-stop watching.
Netflix is clearly betting on the idea that if they own the content they will never have to worry about striking a new deal to keep the show on their catalog. You will always be able to find “House of Cards” on Netflix.
For now original content seems to be paying off as shows like “Stranger Things” and “House of Cards” have become must-watch TV.
