Netflix Signs Overall Deal with Janet Mock

Last week, Variety shared the exclusive report that Netflix had signed a three year, multimillion dollar deal with Janet Mock.

This deal is a historic one, with Mock being the first black transgender woman to sign an overall deal with a major studio. With exclusive rights to her TV series and first-look options for film projects, Netflix and Mock plan to share the stories of underrepresented individuals.

“This deal is so bonkers,” she said in her announcement, adding, “You know, 84% percent of Americans say that they don’t know and/or work with a trans person. And so, there’s potential now with Netflix’s worldwide audience to introduce millions, hundreds of millions of people to trans people and showing people who may not understand us that we can tell our own story.”

You might recognize Janet Mock as the director, producer, and writer of the hugely popular series “Pose” on FX. The Ryan Murphy series focuses on New York City’s LGBTQ ballroom scene. The deal with Netflix would allow her to continue her work with “Pose.”

Upcoming projects are in the works, including a drama series about a young trans woman in college, a series set in New Orleans after the abolishment of slavery, and a reboots of a classic sitcom, according to Variety.
