Netflix Scores 24 Oscar Nominations for The Irishman, Marriage Story & More

The IrishmanOscar nominations were announced this morning and, after the Academy voted to allow streaming services to be eligible for the awards, Netflix has taken 24 nominations.

The Irishman and Marriage Story got top honors, each receiving a nomination for Best Picture, alongside Ford v Ferrari, Jojo Rabbit, Joker, Little Women, 1917, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, and Parasite. Adam Driver and Scarlett Johannson earned nominations for their roles in Marriage Story, in the Lead Actor and Lead Actress categories.

Al Pacino and Joe Pesci each earned nominations for Best Supporting Actor for their roles in The Irishman and Martin Scorsese was nominated for Best Director for the Netflix original.

The vote to allow streaming services to take part in the awards took place in April 2019. At that time, the Academy’s Board of Governors said that the existing rules, which say a movie has to run in a theater for only seven days in Los Angeles to qualify, would remain in place. This ruling gave Netflix and others the opportunity to put their films in theaters for a short run before immediately moving them to a streaming platform, while remaining eligible for awards.

The Oscars will air on ABC on February 9, 2020. You can find the full list of nominations here.
