Netflix Ready to Film a Documentary Series Covering the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup

Remote and Soccer game on TV

Netflix is closely following the upcoming 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the biggest stand-alone women’s sporting event in history. The streaming service is ready to cover all the events leading up to and following the tournament, which Netflix will stream as a documentary series debuting this fall. Netflix is co-producing the docuseries alongside TIME Studios, Words + Pictures, and Togethxr.

“The all-access sports series will allow audiences to intimately follow the US Women’s National Team’s players and coaches and reveal an inside look at the most decorated team in soccer history. Viewers will get a first-hand look at the pressure, the euphoria, the joy, and the hardships that these world-class athletes experience as they strive to capture their third World Cup title in a row. Issues ranging from racial diversity, LGBTQ+ rights, equal pay, family, and motherhood are all brought to light as the narrative unfolds.”

The docuseries has already begun production in New Zealand and Australia. Directed by Rebecca Gitlitz, the series will follow Megan Rapinoe’s last professional soccer game before retiring from the league. She will be joined by Alex Morgan, Sofia Huerta, Lynn Williams, Kristie Mewis, and Alyssa Thompson. More players featured in the documentary have yet to be announced.

According to Netflix Tudum, the yet-named docuseries will also “showcase how these players stand on the shoulders of those who came before them and how the team has changed the game when it comes to racial diversity, LGBTQ rights, equal pay, family, and motherhood for the future of women in sports.” The first FIFA Women’s World Cup was played in China in 1991. The United States Women’s Soccer team has won four out of eight World Cups, with high hopes of securing a fifth this weekend.

The 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup kicks off on July 20th in New Zealand and Australia, followed by the US Women’s National Team’s first match against Vietnam on July 21st.
