Netflix Plans to Cut Back on Smoking in Its Original Programming & Disclose If There Is Smoking

The third season of Stranger Things is out and it’s a hit with many, but not everyone. There has been an outcry about Netflix’s use of smoking in its original programming, especially Stranger Things. Now Netflix has responded by saying that they plan to cut back on the amount of smoking you will see in its original programs.

“Netflix strongly supports artistic expression,” Netflix said in a statement to CNN. “We also recognize that smoking is harmful and when portrayed positively on screen can adversely influence young people.”

According to Netflix, programs that are rated TV-14 and below or PG-13 and below for films will be smoking free and even e-cigarette free going forward.

Many have worried that the popularity of Stranger Things is promoting smoking to a new generation of potential smokers. This change on Netflix’s part seems to be an effort to offset any potential concerns from anti-smoking groups.
