This news comes after Netflix halted production on all scripted shows in the US and Canada starting March 16, 2020, including Stranger Things 4. Grace and Frankie, Lucifer, Sex/Life, just to name a few. Now the ripple effect of these delays is spreading outside the US to studios in the UK as evidenced by this delay in the production of The Witcher.
A source close to The Witcher production team told Deadline: “We have made the decision, effective immediately, to pause production for two weeks during this difficult time… this will allow everyone the time to make informed decisions about how to move forward.” They added: “The coronavirus has raised challenging issues for everyone working on set on productions for Netflix. We are very grateful for all the work everyone has done to keep cast and crew safe during this pandemic.”
Netflix isn’t the only streaming service to be affected by coronavirus delays. Hulu has postponed production on popular shows like The Handmaid’s Tale, and Apple TV+ hit pause on season 2 of The Morning Show starring Jennifer Aniston, as well as Jason Momoa’s See. Streaming services that have yet to launch including NBC Peacock and HBO Max have also been hit with production delays, as has the short-form video app Quibi.
