Netflix is bringing more Korean content to it’s platform thanks to a new multi-year deal with Korean Media company JTBC, according to Deadline. This partnership will go into effect in 2020 and grant Netflix streaming rights of JTBC’s original TV dramas in more than 190 countries.
Korean culture and programming is becoming a growing interest worldwide, and Netflix is not one to be left behind. In 2016, Netflix launched in Korea and first entered an international licensing agreement with JTBC for rights to the company’s 600 hours of TV shows including successful global hits SKY Castle, Something in the Rain, Life and My Country: The New Age.
Since then, Netflix has continued to grow its Korean content library, most recently ordering new original stand-up, sci-fi romance, action and drama series, including The School Nurse Files and an order for season two of its first original Korean drama series Kingdom.
Earlier this week, Netflix also signed an agreement with one of Korea’s leading series producers CJ ENM/Studio Dragon, who boasts credit for one of Korea’s most successful shows of all time, Guardian: The Lonely And Great God. CJ, Studio Dragon and Netflix have had previous partnerships, and this new one will kick off in 2020 giving Netflix rights to distribute the Korean media company’s content on its platform globally.
