Amazon, in an effort to attract new members, recently announced that it has secured rights to NFL games. This will allow Amazon to be the exclusive streaming service for 10 Thursday Night NFL Games in 2017. It is also reported that Amazon is in talks with other sports leagues to secure more live sports.
Netflix has no interest in following Amazon’s lead into live events and sports.
In a statement from Netflix, they said:
“Investors ask us about Amazon’s move into NFL football. That is not a strategy that we think is smart for us since we believe we can earn more viewing and satisfaction from spending that money on movies and TV shows.”
Netflix also announced that it has no interest in a live TV streaming service such as Sling TV, PlayStation Vue, or DIRECTV NOW, by saying these services “may appeal to a segment of the population that doesn’t subscribe to a pay TV bundle.” Netflix continued, “But we don’t think it will have much of an impact on us as Netflix is largely complimentary to pay TV packages.”
It seems Netflix has plans to focus more heavily on new original shows. Finding the new House of Cards or Stranger Things is worth more to it than live TV or some NFL games.
