Gogo, a leader in offering Wi-Fi in air on major airlines, is now working with Netflix to bring their streaming service to passengers. The service is currently being tested on Aeromexico between now and October 17, 2016.
As the first airline to launch with Gogos new 2Ku technology, we couldnt be more excited to help Aeromexico bring this great new passenger experience to life, commented Dave Bijur, Gogos regional president. Gogos industry-leading 2Ku technology is enabling passengers to connect using any Wi-Fi enabled device and experience all of Netflixs hit series just as they would at home.
You will need a Netflix subscription to use the service, but you will be able to sign up for a free trial of Netflix streaming service. You will need a subscription to Gogos Internet service that is sold by the day or month. If you do not have a subscription when you take off, you can subscribe to Gogo through the in-plane Wi-Fi network.
In the past, due to limited bandwidth, Gogo has blocked streaming services, such Amazon, Hulu, and Pandora, but now they hope to be able to not only offer better web browsing but to also offer solid streaming of Netflix.
Currently there is no word on other possible services such as Amazon, Hulu, Sling TV, and many other similar services.
Gogo Wi-Fi Internet is already available on many US carriers such as Delta and American Airlines. If this test with Aeromexico is successful, you should expect the service to slowly roll out to additional airlines. The only question is will airlines, such as Delta, be willing to give up the revenue from renting movies through their subscription service in favor of Netflix being made available through Gogo? Will market pressure force them into offering the service?
