Netflix ‘Little House on the Prairie’ Series Gets a Second Season Ahead of Series Premiere

Netflix is releasing a new series this July, based on Laura Ingalls Wilder’s ‘Little House’ books. Today, ahead of the Season 1 premiere, the streamer announced that the series has already been renewed for a second season.

The books, written in during the Great Depression and published in the 1930s, were turned into the Little House on the Prairie series in the 70s. Netflix will premiere its own version on July 9.

Here’s how Netflix describes the series: “Part hopeful family drama, part epic survival tale, and part origin story of the American West, this fresh adaptation of Laura Ingalls Wilder’s iconic semi-autobiographical ‘Little House’ books offers a kaleidoscopic view of the struggles and triumphs of those who shaped the frontier.”

Along with sharing the premiere date today, Netflix announced that a second season is also on the way.

“We are delighted to renew this beautiful reimagining of Little House on the Prairie for a second season ahead of its Netflix debut,” said Jinny Howe, Netflix’s head of US and Canada scripted series. “The exceptional work by Rebecca Sonnenshine and the entire cast and crew on Season 1 has established a rich foundation of storytelling for years to come. With its hopeful spirit and emotional authenticity, we’re confident that Little House will deliver even more of what fans truly love.”

That cast and crew includes executive producer Trip Friendly for Friendly Family Productions (along with Joy Gorman Wettels for Joy Coalition, Dana Fox, and Susanna Fogel.) Friendly is the son of Ed Friendly who produced the 1974 Little House series that aired on NBC from 1974 to 1984.

Showrunner Rebecca Sonnenshine told Netflix that she’s been a fan of the book series since she was five years old. Of the renewal, she said, “I’m incredibly grateful to our wonderful cast and crew, who put their hearts and hard work into making our first season come alive. We can’t wait to share this new adaptation of the Little House books with the world, and we’re thrilled that Netflix is giving us the opportunity to continue the story.”

The series will star Alice Halsey as Laura Ingalls; Skywalker Hughes as Laura’s older sister, Mary; Luke Bracey as Pa, aka Charles Ingalls; and Crosby Fitzgerald as Ma, Caroline Ingalls.
