Netflix Leads Oscar Race as Streaming Services Take Center Stage

The Academy Award nominations are out and Netflix led all studios with a total of 18 nominations, thanks in part to Bradley Cooper’s Leonard Bernstein biopic Maestro.

Behind Netflix were Apple Original Films, Searchlight, and Universal, all tied with 13 nominations, according to a breakdown of the nods from Variety. Oppenheimer, Christopher Nolan’s epic film about the creation of the nuclear bomb, led all films with 13 nominations, followed by independent darling Poor Things, starring Emma Stone, with 11 nods and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon with 10. You can see the full list of nominations here.

The nomination tally marks another good year for Netflix, and alongside Apple, shows the kind of quality productions that come out of the streaming world. Last year, Netflix boasted the second-most Oscar nominations, behind A24 and its eventual Oscar-winning Everything Everywhere All at Once. Netflix, however, has never won the best picture award, with smaller streaming rival Apple the first to achieve that goal with CODA in 2022.

Still, the number of Netflix’s nominations, including in key categories like Best Picture, show the breadth of content the streaming service is able to offer. The company is just as known for its films and shows with mass appeal — aka dumb and fun — as it is prestige works.

Netflix is scheduled to report its quarterly earnings today, so expect to hear more about it from the company’s executives then.
