Netflix Just Purchased a Comic Book Company

After Netflix’s success with Marvel shows it seems that it wants to dive deeper into comics. Yesterday Netflix purchased the comic book firm Millarworld. This gives Netflix control of popular comic series including Kick-Ass, Kingsman, and Old Man Logan.

Netflix said the deal was a natural progression in the company’s effort to work directly with prolific and skilled creators and to acquire intellectual property and ownership of stories.

Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos went on to say that Millar is “as close as you can get to a modern day Stan Lee”—the cocreator of Spider-Man and other Marvel characters.

Clearly Netflix sees the purchase as a way to create more Netflix Originals as Sarandos said, “We look forward to creating new Netflix Originals from several existing franchises as well as new super-hero, anti-hero, fantasy, sci-fi and horror stories Mark and his team will continue to create and publish.”

Millar, the creator of Millarworld, previously worked at Marvel for eight years developing comic books and story arcs for the first Avengers movie, “Captain America: Civil War,” and “Logan (Wolverine).”

Netflix has not said what properties Netflix plans to turn into original shows first. For now Netflix is likely focusing on closing the deal before it worries about what show it wants to create first.
