Netflix Is Working on a Weekly News Magazine Show

It looks like Netflix wants to expand their weekly original programming for late night talk programs to a news-focused program.

According to a report from MarketWatch and sources familiar with the undertaking, Netflix is working on a weekly news magazine show similar to CBS’s 60 Minutes and ABC’s 20/20. The new program will feature a mix of content and topics that are relevant to what is happening in the here and now.

Netflix reportedly hopes the new show will be a “sharp, balanced” news program that will help make the company a great source not just for entertainment but for news.

Netflix is reportedly spending $8 billion on new content in 2018 to fund 700 shows and films. Reports are that by 2020, Netflix is planning to spend $12.2 billion on new shows and films. A weekly news magazine would fit nicely into that effort and for a fraction of the cost of a major blockbuster show or film.

No date for the new show has been announced, but rumors are Netflix is looking for a 2018 launch to take advantage of the November mid-term elections.
