Netflix Is Testing Out a New App on Roku

Netflix_Web_LogoNetflix has started to roll out its new Roku app to more users. If you ended up in the lucky test group you may have had this app for some time, but now even more people are starting to see it.

So what is this new app? In short it is similar to the old Roku Netflix app, but there is a new landing screen with a sliding list of recommended shows. These recommended shows and movies are Netflix Originals, content from your watch list, and items you started but did not finish.

So what is Netflix trying to get from this new app?

From the looks of it—like most things Netflix has been doing in the last year—their goal is to get more viewership. They do this two different ways. Not only do they suggest more shows and movies you may like but they also start playing the content if you don’t act quickly. Hang out on a show too long in the menu, and it starts playing.

This auto play is not new to Netflix but the difference now is it happens from the menu before you even click on the show. Hang out on the banner for the show and before you know it you’re watching the show.

We are unsure how quickly this will roll out. Some of our readers have said they had the new app for some time now. Others said they can get it on a Roku 3 but no other player. So what devices will support this and how many people will get this new app is unknown at this time.
