Netflix About to Become More Expensive for Current Subscribers

netflix

netflix-watchingAre you still grandfathered in on the old $7.99 HD plan from almost two years ago? The good news is Netflix did make good on their promise not to raise your rates for two years. The bad news? The two years is almost over.

In a recent letter to shareholders Netflix said, “In Q2 and Q3, we’ll be releasing a substantial number of our U.S. customers from price grandfathering on the HD plan and they’ll have the option of continuing at $7.99 but now on the SD plan, or continuing on HD at $9.99 a month.”

Although it shouldn’t be any great shock that Netflix prices are going up maybe how much is the real surprise. Netflix is caught in a price war with Hulu, Amazon, and several other smaller services for older content, and they also want to produce twice the original content as they did last year. Add that all together and something has to give.

The good news for subscribers is even at $9.99 Netflix is still a great deal less expensive than cable TV with a ton more content. Not only that but Netflix also is committed to bringing even more original content to their subscribers.

Hopefully Netflix subscribers will quickly see the benefits of the price increase and that may happen sooner than you think. This year is the year Netflix should start receiving more Disney content but the exact date for that is still unknown. Hopefully the Disney deal and others will start bringing more content to the streaming service shortly.
