Even earlier than that, in September 2016, Netflix shared their plan to make half of the Netflix catalog original shows and movies. “It will take us a couple more years” to hit that target, Netflix CFO David Wells said at that time. “We’re a third to halfway to where we want to be. … We’ve got a ways to go”
Now, recent data from Reelgood illustrates how Netflix’s content library has steadily evolved each year since 2010, including how that plan has played out. One key piece of data from the report shows that in 2013, Netflix had only 8 Netflix Originals available. That number has grown to 1,101 so far this year.

Netflix is likely trying to compete with other services that have released original series, which they’ve used to keep subscribers interested and coming back month after month for new episodes and seasons.
