Netflix Has Fewer Movies But 300% More TV Shows Than a Decade Ago

The IrishmanOver the past couple years, Netflix has proven an increased focus on creating original content. Back in August 2018, we reported that Netflix Originals made up over 55% of the content added to the platform.

Even earlier than that, in September 2016, Netflix shared their plan to make half of the Netflix catalog original shows and movies. “It will take us a couple more years” to hit that target, Netflix CFO David Wells said at that time. “We’re a third to halfway to where we want to be. … We’ve got a ways to go”

Now, recent data from Reelgood illustrates how Netflix’s content library has steadily evolved each year since 2010, including how that plan has played out. One key piece of data from the report shows that in 2013, Netflix had only 8 Netflix Originals available. That number has grown to 1,101 so far this year.

Take a look at the progression of Netflix Original titles in the charts below. The data also shows that Netflix has shifted focus when it comes to the type of content being offered. While the platform has 300% more TV shows than it did a decade ago, the number of movies on Netflix has dropped by 45%.

Netflix is likely trying to compete with other services that have released original series, which they’ve used to keep subscribers interested and coming back month after month for new episodes and seasons.

Have you noticed the shift from Netflix being a movie-focused platform to adding more TV series?
