Netflix continues to get in the ring as it will be home to the super middleweight boxing match between Canelo Álvarez and Terence Crawford, scheduled for September 13. Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada, will host the match for Alvarez’s Super Middleweight Championship. The historic super-fight is promoted by the combat sports conglomerate and owner of WWE and UFC, the TKO Group, and Saudi official Turki Al-Sheikh.
During the Canelo vs. Crawford press conference, UFC President Dana White introduced Max Kellerman, who White called the “best boxing analyst in the sport,” as the first member of the broadcast team for the fight. Kellerman called the one-in-a-lifetime fight “a perfect storm” and credited White as “the best combat sports promoter of my lifetime.”
Kellerman has been out of the sports spotlight since leaving ESPN in 2023, and was one of boxing’s most prominent commentators. From the mid-2000s to 2018, Kellerman called matches on various networks, including Friday Night Fights on ESPN and HBO’s World Championship Boxing and Boxing After Dark.
As cable declined in recent years, premium networks such as HBO and Showtime have exited boxing after more than three decades, allowing streaming services like DAZN and Netflix to become destinations for the sport.
Last year, Netflix streamed its first boxing event, Jake Paul vs. Mike Tyson, which was plagued with technical glitches and widespread errors, as it was one of the most-watched live-stream events of 2024. Due to the technical issues, a man in Florida filed a lawsuit against the streaming behemoth, yet Netflix was able to resolve its technical difficulties in time to stream its first-ever NFL games on Christmas 2024.
Netflix’s live event woes seem to be a thing of the past, as the platform will get more Christmas Day football later this year. Since January, the streamer has been the home of WWE Raw, which airs each Monday at 8:00 PM ET. There are also reports that Netflix could begin streaming more WWE and UFC events next year.
As far as the jabs and uppercuts inside the ring go, this summer, Netflix is home to Taylor vs. Serrano 3. The conclusion of the trilogy is the first all-women’s boxing event at Madison Square Garden. On Friday, July 11, the megacard will showcase five of the top 10 women in the sport to an audience of over 300 million subscribers.
Like Paul vs. Tyson, Canelo vs. Crawford, and Taylor vs. Serrano 3 will stream for free, and anyone with an active Netflix subscription can watch on the platorm.
