Netflix “Discontinues” AirPlay Support on iOS Devices

This week Netflix rolled out an update to their iOS devices. According to Netflix in a statement sent to MacRumors, this was done deliberately because of AirPlay’s roll out to 3rd party devices.

Netflix told Macrumors: “…we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met. Members can continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices.”

It seems that Netflix is worried that AirPlay on 3rd party TVs will give a substandard experience when using Netflix. To avoid having to deal with upset subscribers blaming Netflix for poor streaming quality they have decided to end support of AirPlay. According to Netflix, it is impossible to tell if Netflix is casting to an Apple TV or a 3rd party AirPlay device right now so Netflix is blocking all AirPlay casting.

This means now if you want to watch Netflix on the Apple TV or any AirPlay supported device you will need to use its native Netflix app. In our testing Android devices can still cast to other devices like Roku but Apple TV users are out of luck when it comes to AirPlay.
