MoviePass will allow anyone, for $14.99 for 2 movies a month, $19.99 for 3 movies a month, or $39 a month, to go to the movie theater as often as they want. (A few select cities do have a higher price.) When you subscribe, MoviePass will give you a debit card that will work at over 90% of movie theaters in the United States. The debit card will only pay for your movie ticket; food and other items are not covered.
Lowe and movie theaters hope that this service and other plans will help turn around the steadily falling attendance numbers at local movie theaters. Many have speculated that the 45% increase in movie ticket prices are one of the main issues.
With the average movie ticket cost in 2015 being $8.61, this means that if you go to the movies four times a month you will save money with this service. Although this will be a deal for many movie fans, many Americans may not see the benefit for the service.
Lowe and MoviePass seem to see the issue already and plan to address it. Weve got a subscription where you can go to the movies at almost any theater that accepts a debit card, yet people dont really get how great an experience we can make it, said Lowe.
There is also a fear that theaters will start to block the service, but Lowe addresses that fear in his interview. The theaters will get full price, Lowe said. Were not asking for a discount or a rebate. When we go into these conversations, thats the first thing they expect us to be asking.
Although the service is still new, it seems like it could find a following with many dedicated movie fans; however, will there be enough movie fans to make it a viable business?
