Netflix CEO Predicts That Broadcast TV Will Be Dead By 2030

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has for years now predicted the death of broadcast TV. This week he once again did so saying “broadcast TV will probably last until 2030.”

This all comes as it was reported that traditional pay-TV services might have lost as many as 2.5 million subscribers in 2018. According to reports, the big five of AT&T, Charter, Comcast, DISH, and Verizon Fios lost 2.4 million subscribers in 2018 with the other smaller cable networks making up the remaining subscriber losses.

DISH’s losses are in addition to the 658,000 DIRECTV lost, 36,000 Spectrum lost, 19,000 Comcast lost, and 46,000 Fios lost. These numbers do not even include the losses from smaller cable TV companies like Cox. In total, pay-TV companies lost 2.5 million subscribers in 2018.

Now does this mean that Netflix will be right about 2030 being the drop-dead date of traditional pay TV? Right now it is anyone’s guess as to when broadcast TV will die if the economy would suddenly crash it would likely move that date up even more.

So what do you think? When do you predict that traditional pay-TV services will fail? Leave us a comment and let us know what you think.
