During that conversation he talked about buffering—that annoying moment when your stream stops and you wait for the video to catch up.
During the interview Hastings said, “We want to make buffering a relic like that dial tone.” Making light of the idea that the old dial tone you heard when a modem connected is now a thing of the past for most.
He went on to talk about how Netflix has invested and is investing in network servers, codecs, and content delivery mechanisms to reduce buffering to Netflix subscribers.
Hastings went so far as to say that his goal is to make video on any device instantaneous, which is something that we are getting close to but are still far from achieving.
When talking about data caps Hasting complimented some new unlimited data plans from Verizon and AT&T. He went on to talk about how Netflix is shooting to get its streams down to 200 kilobits per second, which is less than half of the current 500 kilobits per second.
If Netflix can hit that mark it will allow you to stream twice as much Netflix without using more data.
Although this is far from killing data caps it will be a huge step forward for many Americans who suffer under strict data caps.
