The first big announcement is that Netflix is now available on Linux devices running Firefox. Yesterday Netflix rolled out its HTML5 video player on its website, which will support Firefox running on Linux devices. Now you can stream your favorite Netflix show even if you don’t want to own an Apple or Windows PC.
The second, even bigger, announcement is that Netflix is bringing HDR support to an HDR TV with Chromecast built in. Now you will be able to watch Netflix in Dolby Vision and HDR10 if you own a TV that supports HDR10 and has built-in Chromecast.
This will open HDR support to a whole new range of devices. Currently HDR support has been limited to a handful of players including select Roku players and Nvidia Shield.
HDR is a new standard that adds more colors and deeper blacks to 4K video. Many viewers had been unable to see a difference in 4K, and this addresses that issue. Currently if you want a selection of 4K HDR content you need a streaming service such as Netflix. At this time cable TV is still trying to catch up to 4K content.
